Sports Medicine

Soft Tissue Pain/Injury Specialists

The team at Cathal J Moran dedicate themselves to treating soft tissue injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Specialising in ACL/knee ligament injuries, rotator cuff tears, shoulder sprains/instability and meniscus tears. Soft tissue pain and injury commonly occur during sports and everyday activities.

While many athletes can return to a high level of performance without surgical intervention, some soft tissue injuries require surgical treatment. Occasionally, advanced reconstruction is necessary. Prioritising minimally invasive procedures whenever possible and emphasising the most up-to-date techniques in modern orthopedics and sports medicine.

The specialist clinical team possesses experience across a wide range of national and international institutes. Collaborating closely with many high-level amateur and professional teams.

Sports Medicine Team Approach

A multidisciplinary sports medicine team can have a profound impact on athlete health, performance, injury prevention and recovery.

Our practice philosophy serves as a multidimensional method, providing a specialised setting to deliver care for athletes, teams and complex cases.  By linking in with specialists throughout our institute and beyond, we deliver enhanced athlete care, improved communication, opportunities for learning, goal setting and professional growth as part of what we do.

All related image-guided therapeutic interventions such as targeted joint injections and spinal interventions are supported.

UPMC SSC is the only centre in Ireland that has two dedicated clinical 3.0T MRI scanners delivering superior image resolution and quality, supporting a centre of excellence in the assessment and treatment of Musculoskeletal pathology as well as general imaging.

Injection Treatments & Regenerative Medicine

Our Regenerative Medicine Clinic operates at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin. Professor Moran is highly experienced in Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine. He offers expertise in regenerative medicine, biologics, and cell therapy.

The team is dedicated to providing patients with access to innovative biological treatments. These treatments include cell therapy, blood components, and natural substances. These treatments leverage the body’s own healing abilities to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Research suggests that ideal patients are in the early stages of osteoarthritis. They may also have persistent tendon injuries. These patients have tried other non-surgical treatments without success. However, they are not yet considering joint replacement or other surgeries.

Personalised Rehabilitation Programmes

We are always passionate about guiding patients and athletes towards recovery. Exercise and physiotherapy play a crucial role in this journey. Collaborating with Ireland’s top physiotherapists enhances our patients’ and athletes’ outcomes.

Interacting with professional athletes and teams, along with their physiotherapists, helps us craft specialised protocols. These protocols cater to all patients, whether they undergo surgery or not. Clinical specialists are available to address any pre- or post-surgery queries.

The resources section contains detailed post-surgery rehabilitation protocols.

Health & Wellbeing

The Cathal J Moran team is dedicated to offering a holistic model of patient-centered care. We believe in providing comprehensive musculoskeletal care that prioritises both the physical and mental well-being of our patients.

Our treatment approach emphasises non-surgical management whenever feasible. This approach is bolstered by regenerative medicine and biologic treatments. In cases where surgery is recommended, we prefer minimally invasive techniques.

Furthermore, we integrate exercise and rehabilitation into our treatment plans. Our ultimate goal is to assist patients in returning to their regular activities to support a healthy lifestyle.
